When you want to freshen up your home, you will agree that buying space fresheners, and especially various sprays, knows how to smell strongly and is not the most pleasant feeling when you accidentally inhale them. Fortunately, this can easily avoid with a simple DIY project. You will need a couple of ingredients to make a homemade air freshener with essential oils, a scent that will relax and refresh you.

Homemade air fresheners will be more natural and healthier to use. If you are ready to experiment with scents, read the article below carefully.

Why is it good to use a homemade air freshener?

  • you don’t tolerate powerful odors which cause you nausea and headaches,
  • don’t like the fact that there are various substances in artificial fresheners that are not the best for your health,
  • you suffer from asthma or some allergies,
  • you love natural scents because they have a beneficial effect on your body.

What do you need to make a homemade air freshener?

To make your natural freshener, need to have at least some following ingredients:

Citrus – whether it is lemon or orange, citrus fruits are very suitable for this project, because, in addition to having a fantastic fresh note, their scent lasts a very long time. Citrus aroma has a positive effect on mood and refreshes your living and working space.

To make a natural orange freshener, you need:

  • A glass jar or some other nice container
  • Orange
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Cloves
  • A few drops of vanilla

Mix all ingredients and heat almost to boiling. Leave everything open in a busy place and you have a homemade air freshener.

Lemon Air Freshener

For a homemade lemon air freshener, you need:

  • Lemon
  • Vanilla extract
  • Rosemary

The procedure is the same as with the previous scent (everything heated almost to boiling, and then left open to release enchanting scents).

Spices and spicy plant – on this occasion, we recommend plants that have a specific “woody” scent, such as rosemary and thyme.

Use cinnamon sticks (which, besides smelling wonderful, also have a pleasant look suitable for design).

Pine needles – does anything smell better than pine needles? One thing is for sure – they are easy to get and be sure to choose the fresh and fragrant. If you find a piece of pine resin on the way – you are lucky.

  • Laurel
  • Nutmeg

Vanilla Extract – Vanilla belongs to the orchid family and is the only orchid whose fruits are edible. It originates from Mexico, which is still, along with Madagascar, the most famous producer of this spice.

For homemade vanilla extract you need:

  • Sterilized oblong bottle
  • 2 bars of vanilla
  • 180 ml of vodka

Put two bars of vanilla in a bottle, pour vodka and close it well. Shake the bottle several times, and then leave it in a cool, dark place. Shake the bottle once a day for the first week.

After three weeks, the vanilla extract is ready for use.

Flower petals – your favorite flower can become the principal ingredient of a homemade air freshener. How? Flower petals cook in water for at least 30 minutes. Pour the cooled liquid into a spray bottle and refresh the home with your favorite floral scent.

Sea Dew

Rosemary – “sea dew”, is an evergreen small shrub that grows from 1 to 2 m. The twigs are covered with resinous, leathery, needle-like, and dark green leaves. The flowers are white, pink, or purple-blue. It originates from the Mediterranean and grows in the USA and Mexico.

Fresh, dried leaves and rosemary flowers used whole, chopped, or ground. Dried rosemary has a nobler scent than fresh. The smell and taste are very aromatic. Rosemary is one of the basic spices of Mediterranean cuisine.

Mint Extract

Mint extract – if you make this extract, you will preserve the wonderful aroma of mint during the winter when no fresh leaves remain. All you need to do is pick as many mint leaves as possible (with or without stems). Wash the leaves under a stream of icy water and drain well to release as much odor as possible. Put the washed leaves in a jar and pour vodka over them. Put twice as much vodka as mint leaves. All the leaves must soak in alcohol.

You can combine mint extract with lime, vanilla extract, and thyme. This is an ideal way to get the perfect homemade air freshener.

Dried Blends

Dried blends or potpourri – have a divine scent and are easy to prepare. These mixtures can be decorative in your home if you put them in glass jars, wooden bowls, wicker baskets, and balls made for that purpose. It is enough to stir them to release a pleasant smell.

Countless combinations of potpourri that you can make, the mixture depends on what you want to achieve with the scent or your affinity for certain scents that remind you of some pleasant moments. For the bedroom, choose a mixture of relaxing plants such as lavender, chamomile, valerian.

For the kitchen, use a mixture of kitchen spices and ingredients such as cinnamon, cloves, anise, bay leaf, cardamom, lemon and orange peel.

Mix dried fruits and flowers, orange peel, lavender, cinnamon sticks, rose petals. You can put this mixture in a glass jar or tie it in a mesh bag.

Homemade fresheners, besides a pleasant smell, look nice, which is a real decoration in your home. The secret is in the glass jar, bottle, transparent box, decorative spray, which is mandatory, and everything else is a variation.
